FLIR cameras helped solve a decades-old mystery in asphalt paving. And now they're helping improve the quality of highway construction.
Since the 1980s, highways that were engineered to last 15 years were failing faster than expected. Why? Thanks to infrared thermography, the answer has been identified-- excessive temperature variations in the hot mix asphalt (HMA) pavement surface, or mat, of a road during laydown. This was the discovery of an ongoing research effort by the State of Washington Department of Transportation (WSDOT) and the University of Washington (UW) into the cause of premature road failure using a FLIR ThermaCAM® infrared camera.
Now, a new generation of infrared cameras makes asphalt thermal imaging as easy as taking a photograph. Washington and a growing number of other states from Alaska to Texas now use FLIR infrared cameras for quality analysis during road construction. FLIR infrared cameras not only make thermal imaging a highly affordable and convenient inspection method, they provide a whole new level of quality control during mat laydown.
